Hearing From God Amidst the Chaos ~ by Jason Norton
I was cleaning out a building yesterday in Quinlan in preparation for our charter school pilot program when a lady named “Sam” arrived at the scene. As most of you know, when you’re cleaning stuff out under time constraints (due to dumpster rental in my case), the stuff needs to go into the trash as soon as possible. But when Sam saw the stuff we were planning on throwing out, she was all over the place, “Oh, my goodness! You can’t throw that away! Oh no–I can take that! Wait!! Don’t throw that away either!” And so on. At that point, I was just praying that I could let her know that she was slowing down the process and interfering with our work without hurting her feelings.
I then got a little nudge from the Holy Spirit: She makes you angry huh?
“Yes Lord!”
Treat her like she is your sister.
“Yes Lord.”
I then began helping her rather than avoiding her. She was resistant at first, but then after about 15 minutes of my carrying everything she wanted to her trailer and strapping it all down for her, she said, “Thank you so much! I’ve got five kids, and two of them have cancer. I’ve been married only seven months. I’m so worn out!”
She did seem very anxious and bothered, so I knew I had to pray with her. But since she was a young woman and I wanted to appear above reproach, I called another female friend over to us and asked, “Sam, can we pray for you?”
She replied with, “Absolutely!!” as she jumped out of her truck for prayer.
I prayed over her, binding the enemy off of her children and her family (she belongs to the Church of Christ, so I wasn’t sure if she appreciated those prayers) and thanking God for her beautiful heart to serve God with tenacity. After the prayer, she was crying, saying, “Thank ya’ll so much, thank ya’ll so much!” I then gave her a big ol’ brother hug. She seemed shocked at first, but then she relaxed. I felt like the Lord said then, “She’s not used to clean, sincere brotherly affection from a male.”
People are so hungry for “clean affection,” and many times don’t even know what it looks like until it is given to them.
