Day 4 – Our Loving God’s Thoughts on Homosexuality – Julie Earl
Romans 1:22-32
God loves all of us beyond our comprehension, which is why He clearly warns us of behaviors that will cause us harm. Those behaviors are called sins. Just as a loving parent doesn’t want their child to play in the middle of a busy highway, God doesn’t want us engaging in sinful behavior because it will hurt us and others.
Homosexuality is one of those harmful sins. It has become the hot topic of the day because people feel, “Hey, we aren’t hurting anyone. We can have sex with and marry whoever we want.” I suppose this would be true if we weren’t designed for a special purpose on the earth. But the truth is that we have been designed for a special purpose. We were designed to walk in a loving relationship with God and in a loving relationship with a spouse of the opposite sex who has strengths that complement our weaknesses. The fruit of that committed marriage is having children, and raising them to walk in loving relationships with God and others as well.
A person engaged in a homosexual relationship has stepped into a life they were not designed for, so they will experience harm and negative consequences – and God doesn’t want that because He loves them. Many years ago a friend of mine poured warm oil into an empty plastic margarine tub, not realizing the oil was still too hot. She picked up the container to put it in the fridge and the bottom dropped off. Her daughter was standing beside her and the hot oil poured onto her face, giving her a serious burn. My friend used the plastic container for something it was not designed for, and it destroyed the container and harmed her daughter.
In the same way, we were not designed for marriage with someone of the same sex. The plumbing doesn’t work to create children for us to love and nurture. (In fact, when we use the wrong holes, our bodies can’t handle the abuse, and AIDS and other sexual diseases spread, and we destroy ourselves.) The emotional combination is also all wrong. When a person marries someone of the same sex, who has similar strengths and weaknesses, they end up with a lopsided, dysfunctional relationship emotionally, physically and spiritually. Husbands and dads were designed to provide physical strength and emotional support in a way that only a man can. Wives and mothers were designed to provide nurturing and emotional support in a way that only a woman can. Putting together two women or two men, robs them (and any children involved) of what the whole point of marriage was set up for in the first place – to complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses as they grow in sacrificial love.
Here is what the book of Romans says about homosexuality:
“Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools….Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another….Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.
“Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them” (Romans 1:22, 26-27, 32 NIV, brackets mine).
As with all sins, Jesus died for us so that we don’t have to receive the death our sins deserve. If you are struggling with homosexuality, call out to Jesus to forgive all your sins and fill you with His Spirit and His power. Immediately begin spending your days with Jesus – talking with Him, reading His written words in the Bible, and spending time with older Christians who can help you grow and overcome every temptation the devil sends your way. God has designed you for amazing things while you’re on this earth!
