What is Your Spiritual Background? ~ by Julie Earl

What is Your Spiritual Background_I was eating out with family, and after the waiter (whom I’ll call “J”) delivered our food, I said to him, “We are about to pray, so is there anything specifically we can pray about for you?”

“There are always things we all need prayer for,” he laughed as he started to turn to go.

“We’ll pray God’s blessings over you, then,” I replied.

As we ate our meal, J did a great job taking care of us, and we enjoyed friendly chatter with him. I continued to pray for him on and off, and during one of those moments of praying, I had the thought that he had been called and anointed for an evangelistic ministry. I sensed that he had known about this when he was younger.

When we got up to leave, I walked over to him as the rest of our group was heading out. (My family is used to me getting side-tracked.) I told him what I felt the Lord was telling me about him, and asked him, “What is your spiritual background?”

He told me what denomination he grew up in, and then told me, “I’ve had my mother and other people tell me a number of times the same thing you just said.”

I was glad to find out I had heard correctly from the Lord, because sometimes I miss it. I had the privilege of encouraging J in all that God had for him as he began again to do life with Jesus. We were both blessed by the conversation, and then I ran out to the car and got him one of my books to help encourage him in his walk with the Lord. He was very appreciative and acted excited. He is an amazing man, and I can’t wait to hear all God does in and through him in the days and years to come!

Note: Once you deliver a gift from the Lord for someone, like this word of knowledge about the calling on J’s life, you may want to ask the person about their spiritual background. This is a great way to open up the conversation if people want to talk more in-depth!
